New Model Releases & Updates

Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk") by Mistral

• Type: Open-weights, trillion-parameter model.
• Key benchmarks: Claimed to match or outperform DeepSeek and Z.ai in coding and cybersecurity; ranks alongside Codex GPT-6.1 Terra for coding.
• vs. Previous best: Mistral positions it as the best open model built in the West, surpassing Chinese models in agentic coding and cyber defense.
• What's notable: Targeted at enterprise users concerned about losing access to closed AI; offers control over cyber defenses.

Benchmark Deep Dive

The most significant benchmarking event this week was the release of Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5. This overhaul fundamentally changes how model quality is measured by shifting 60 percent of the composite score to private test sets. This move is designed to prevent data contamination, where models memorize public benchmark questions, and to better evaluate real-world agentic capabilities.

The immediate result of this shift is a widening of the gap between proprietary and open-weight models. Previously, the gap was approximately 3 points; under Index v5, it has expanded to 12 points. This suggests that while open-source models are competitive on public benchmarks, they lag behind closed-source frontier models on harder, private tasks that likely involve complex reasoning and agentic workflows.

For practitioners, this means that public leaderboard rankings may no longer reflect true performance in proprietary-heavy workflows. The new index also adds new coding and science tasks, further emphasizing practical application over rote knowledge. Google's Gemini 4 Carbon emerged as the top model on this new index, though its restricted access highlights a growing trend of specialized, gated frontier models.

Analysis & Trends

• State of the art: Proprietary models maintain a significant lead in general intelligence and agentic tasks, as evidenced by the 12-point gap in Index v5. Closed models like Gemini 4 Carbon and Claude Opus 5.5 lead in reasoning and coding.
• Open vs. Closed gap: The gap has widened dramatically due to the shift to private benchmarks. However, Mistral Large 4 claims to have closed the gap in specific domains like coding and cyber defense, positioning itself as a top-tier open model.
• Cost-performance: Costs among top models vary 13-fold, indicating a diverse market for different budget constraints.
• Emerging patterns: There is a clear trend toward specialized models, such as Gemini 4 Carbon for cybersecurity and Liquid AI's LFM3 for specialized small-scale tasks.

What to Watch Next

• Open-Source Response to Index v5: Watch for how open-source models like DeepSeek and Qwen adjust their training strategies to better compete on private or harder agentic benchmarks.
• Gemini 4 Carbon Availability: Monitor when Google expands access to Gemini 4 Carbon beyond cybersecurity defenders, as its top ranking could shift broader market adoption.
• Mistral Enterprise Adoption: Track the uptake of Mistral Large 4 in enterprise environments, particularly among companies seeking to avoid vendor lock-in with closed AI providers.
