Con Report
The recent New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2026 served as a massive showcase for the current state of fan culture, drawing over 250,000 attendees and filling the Javits Center to capacity. The event highlighted a vibrant mix of fandoms, with cosplayers bringing everything from Power Rangers to Captain America to life in "GENIUS" costumes that impressed even the most seasoned attendees.
Beyond the costume floor, the convention landscape is evolving. Publishers Weekly noted that at NYCC 2026, "the only constant is change," with Marvel’s shifting dynamics and the "explosive growth of manga" dominating industry conversations.
Internationally, Comic Con Costa Rica 2026 recently concluded, successfully blending traditional "geek" culture with a diverse agenda of board games, tournaments, and workshops.
Craft Spotlight
A significant shift is occurring in the materials used for high-end cosplay. While EVA foam remains the go-to for beginners, the current competitive meta is dominated by 3D printing and advanced thermoplastics like Worbla.
Industry trend coverage suggests that 3D printing has "quietly moved from a niche technique... to something showing up across a huge range of convention-level costumes". This technological adoption is separating hobbyists from serious competitors; as noted by ViceSnob, "Worbla, resin casting, and 3D-printed parts are what separate a costume on the con floor from something that actually places in judging".
In terms of character trends, search data from Google Trends confirms that "anime cosplay," "miku cosplay," and "spiderman cosplay" remain the most searched terms, indicating a continued strong demand for both anime and comic book adaptations.
Coming Up
For cosplayers looking to take their next costume to a contest stage, the immediate calendar is packed with opportunities. L.A. Comic Con 2026 is generating significant buzz, with guides highlighting its immersive areas and cosplay panels as essential stops for fans.
Additionally, Anime Weekend Atlanta is scheduled for November 19–22, 2026, offering one of the largest US anime conventions later this year. The global database Coscove currently tracks over 100 upcoming conventions worldwide that feature specific cosplay contest activities, ensuring that the competitive circuit remains active through the end of 2026.
