Context & numbers

Japan's anime industry reached a record ¥3.8407 trillion ($25.25 billion) in 2024, with overseas demand serving as the primary growth driver. However, 53.5% of anime companies reported lower profits or flat revenues despite the industry boom, indicating uneven distribution of licensing gains among smaller studios and production houses.

The global anime streaming market was valued at USD 7.50 billion in 2024 and is forecast to reach USD 14.65 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual rate of 11.81%. The US–China trade tensions in 2025 increased regulatory barriers, particularly impacting licensing for Chinese-affiliated studios.

The anime movies and TV shows market globally is expected to grow at a 6.2% CAGR through 2035, propelled by streaming platform investment and international co-productions.

On the radar

• Digimon Remaster Initiative: Crunchyroll has begun re-releasing classic Digimon anime with remasterized video quality, shifting titles previously exclusive to Prime Video. Watch for similar library upgrades as platforms compete on technical presentation.

• Piracy Enforcement Momentum: The 2026 crackdown on anime piracy sites (including HiAnime and Bato.to) continues to reshape access patterns. Japan's Ministry of Economy estimates piracy losses at ¥5.7 trillion ($38 billion) in 2025, nearly triple the 2022 figure—expect further enforcement actions and licensing tightening in Q4 2026.

• Ownership Shift Over Licensing: Netflix and Sony are increasingly moving from traditional per-episode licensing to direct franchise ownership, as documented in recent MAPPA partnership moves. Watch how this reshapes availability windows and exclusivity windows in 2027.
