Storytel Launches E-Commerce for Physical Books, Expanding Beyond Audio

Swedish audiobook leader Storytel opened a new e-commerce platform to sell physical books directly, offering 20% discounts to existing audiobook subscribers. The move reflects the company's strategy to own the full reading experience rather than rely solely on subscription revenue. Storytel Books is powered by Sweden Buyersclub's e-commerce infrastructure and marks a significant shift toward a hybrid media model.

US Lawmakers Target E-book Price Disparity—Libraries Pay 4–5× Consumer Rates

State legislators are advancing bills to regulate e-book and audiobook licensing costs for libraries, which currently pay four to five times more than retail consumers for the same titles. Illinois, Washington D.C., and other jurisdictions have proposed fairness legislation. The push comes as public libraries report budget crises driven by unsustainable digital lending agreements negotiated with major publishers.

Audible Ends Legacy Royalty Model by Year-End; Forces Authors to Switch

Amazon's Audible announced it will discontinue its legacy royalty structure for independent creators on ACX (Audible's audiobook platform) by December 31, 2026. Authors must migrate their titles to the new model or remove them from distribution. The shift marks a major restructuring of how indie audiobook authors earn royalties and comes amid industry debate over AI narration policies.

Millie's Korean E-book Subscription Tightens Monetization—Removes Free Trial, Restricts Account Sharing

KT Millie's Korea's leading e-book subscription platform eliminated its first-month free trial and now restricts simultaneous book access per account. These moves follow a 20% price increase last year and reflect aggressive efforts to boost revenue. The platform is simultaneously expanding into webtoons and web novels, targeting 20% market share in the web story category by positioning original IP as a key growth driver.

Korea (Chosun Ilbo, E Daily, EBN News): South Korean media coverage emphasizes Millie's transformation from a pure e-book platform into a "story IP ecosystem." Industry outlets report the company aims to triple original IP output and launch global expansion tied to webtoons and web novels—modeled on Netflix's content strategy. Reporting notes subscriber pressure from free trial removal and account-sharing restrictions, framed as necessary for sustainability in a shrinking Korean book market.

Sweden (Di.se, Feber): Swedish tech media celebrate Storytel's pivot to physical book retail as a "natural next step" for an audiobook giant. Coverage notes the 20% subscriber discount as a customer retention tactic and flags the partnership with Sweden Buyersclub as evidence of Storytel's push toward profitability and ecosystem lock-in.

United States (Daily Herald, WESA Pittsburgh, Chicago Tribune): Library advocates dominate the conversation, with reporting framing e-book pricing as a crisis. Coverage emphasizes lawmakers' intervention as necessary—libraries are cutting collections and reducing digital access due to unsustainable publisher licensing. The narrative positions libraries and consumers against "Big Five" publishers defending high licensing fees.

Context & numbers

Audiobook market momentum: U.S. audiobook sales reached $2.43 billion in 2025, up 9% year-over-year, with digital formats accounting for nearly 100% of revenue. • Libby/OverDrive lending partnership updates: OverDrive rolled out simplified lending partnership tools in early September; watch for new library adoption and state regulatory responses to licensing terms.

• Spotify audiobook competitive pressure: With Audible rolling out AI interactivity and Storytel moving into physical retail, Spotify's audiobook strategy may face pressure to differentiate beyond pricing.
