Mexico's Peso Rebounds on US Jobs Disappointment; IPC Consolidates

Mexico's S&P/BMV IPC slipped just 0.18% to 63,712 on October 2, while the peso staged a sharp recovery, gaining 0.83% to 18.15 per dollar after disappointing US jobs data reset expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts. The peso had weakened sharply to 18.30 on October 1 after Banxico held rates at 6.50% on September 24, signaling it would not follow the Fed's easing cycle immediately. Despite the week's volatility, the Mexican currency lost 2.75% for the full week as divergence between Banxico (on hold) and the Federal Reserve weighed on sentiment.

Colombia's Shock Rate Hike to 12.25% Stuns Markets; COLCAP Retreats

Banco de la República surprised markets on September 30 with an unexpected rate hike to 12.25%, sending Colombia's COLCAP index lower. The index fell 0.75% to 2,530.05 on October 1 and continued sliding 0.59% to 2,515.02 on October 2, as financial sector stocks led the selloff. The surprise tightening reflects inflation pressures and marks a hawkish shift for the central bank after months of easing. However, the Colombian peso gained 1.5% to around 3,263 per dollar by October 2, as higher rates attracted carry trade unwind flows.

Chile's IPSA Edges Higher as Copper Steadies; Peso Hits Yearly Low

Chile's IPSA managed a modest gain of 0.08% to 10,917 on October 2, even as the Chilean peso weakened to 989.60 per dollar—its weakest level in a year. Copper held near US$14,417 a tonne on October 1, though Chile's August output plummeted 12.8% to a 15-year low, raising supply concerns amid strike tensions at Escondida and Centinela mines. Southern Copper rose 3.17% on October 2 as China's Golden Week holiday left copper futures relatively flat, providing a mild tailwind for regional miners.

Mexico's FDI and Nearshoring Resilience Contrasts With Weak GDP Growth

Mexico recorded US$34.97 billion in foreign direct investment during the first half of 2026—a record—yet GDP growth remained sluggish at 1.2%, as most capital was profit reinvestment by existing multinationals rather than greenfield expansion. The nearshoring narrative remains intact, with US$534 billion in bilateral exports to the US and USMCA renewal negotiations looming, but power and water constraints are limiting new facility buildouts despite strong investor interest.

Mexican media (Milenio, El CEO) reported on September 30 that the BMV's weakness was driven by Kimberly-Clark's decline and tepid responses to Fed rate signals, with bond repricing weighing on equities.

Investing.com Spanish edition (mx.investing.com) noted the peso's 2.75% depreciation over the week as the key headline, highlighting Banxico's dovish hold versus Fed tightening as the core driver of currency weakness.

Chilean press (Diario Estrategia) reported IPSA's 0.78% drop on September 30, citing retail and energy weakness ahead of the holiday-shortened final quarter.

Colombian pension reform watchers flagged that changes to AFP (pension fund) distribution rules could reduce monthly equity flows to local stocks, as lump-sum payouts replace ongoing reinvestment cycles—a structural headwind for COLCAP liquidity.
