Pashinyan confirms year-long opening of Azerbaijani railway for Armenian cargo

On October 9, 2026, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the Azerbaijani railway has been open to the transportation of Armenian cargo for almost a year. This confirmation provides concrete evidence that transit corridors are functioning in practice, even if formal political agreements on full connectivity are still being finalized. The statement underscores the gradual implementation of transport links agreed upon in recent peace processes.

US and Azerbaijan discuss border delimitation progress

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a telephone conversation on October 6, 2026, to discuss the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The call specifically addressed the ongoing border delimitation and demarcation work. High-level engagement from Washington suggests continued US interest in stabilizing the South Caucasus and monitoring the implementation of the trilateral agreements.

Analytical reports highlight "hidden knot" in border talks

Azerbaijani media outlet TodayPress.tv reported on October 5, 2026, that while commissions met in November 2025 and April 2026 to resolve procedural issues, a "hidden knot" remains in the border delimitation process. The analysis suggests that while technical matters have been largely addressed, the pace of physical demarcation is lagging behind diplomatic expectations. This indicates that while the framework is agreed, the on-the-ground reality of drawing the line faces persistent logistical or local-level challenges.

Pashinyan addresses fate of missing persons at Commonwealth summit

Speaking at a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) meeting on October 10, 2026, Pashinyan acknowledged that while peace with Azerbaijan is now a "reality," the fate of Armenian prisoners of war and missing persons remains unresolved. He emphasized that cooperation on this humanitarian issue is essential for lasting reconciliation. This highlights that while state-level borders and transit are advancing, human security concerns remain a critical friction point in public discourse.

Local view

Azerbaijani Media: TodayPress.tv analyzes the slowdown in border demarcation, suggesting that the "hidden knot" lies in the discrepancy between high-level political will and the slow pace of technical commission work. The outlet notes that despite meetings in late 2025 and early 2026, visible progress on the ground remains limited, raising questions about whether the delay is due to local resistance or complex terrain issues.

Armenian Media: Azatutyun.am (RFE/RL Armenian service) reported on Pashinyan’s clarification regarding an Azerbaijani serviceman who entered Armenian territory. The PM stated that there was no demand for the soldier’s extradition, signaling a de-escalation approach by Yerevan to avoid unnecessary diplomatic incidents during the delicate delimitation phase.
