This Week in Photography
The photography industry continues to navigate a complex landscape where traditional sales metrics diverge from niche enthusiasm. While overall digital camera sales are experiencing a slump, the compact camera market is thriving, driven by a renewed interest in small, portable devices. This trend suggests that while high-end system sales may be cooling, the desire for accessible, pocketable imaging tools remains robust among enthusiasts.
Simultaneously, the boundaries between still photography and video content are blurring further, with platforms like Instagram offering substantial financial incentives to migrate video creators. On the creative front, photographers are pushing the limits of visibility, capturing rare astronomical events and experimenting with psychedelic film stocks that challenge conventional color science.

Technique & Craft
Controlled Chaos with Psychedelic Blues Films
- Core Idea: Exploring the unpredictable color shifts and grain structures of "Psych Blues" film stocks to create abstract, emotive imagery.
- How to Apply:
- Embrace light leaks and double exposures as features, not bugs.
- Experiment with cross-processing or expired stock to enhance color aberrations.
- Use high-contrast subjects to ground the abstract color palette.
Environmental Wildlife Composition
- Core Idea: Balancing the animal subject with its environment to provide narrative context without losing focus on the creature itself.
- How to Apply:
- Step back to include more of the habitat rather than zooming in tightly.
- Use leading lines from the environment (branches, water flow) to draw the eye to the animal.
- Consider the behavior of the animal within the space to create a dynamic interaction between subject and setting.
