Tool Updates

Obsidian continues to gain traction as a unified productivity hub, with users reporting success in replacing multiple specialized apps with a single Obsidian setup. A recent case study details how one user stopped paying for five separate apps by consolidating note-taking, task management, and project planning into Obsidian. Another report highlights the friction of switching between apps like Notion, Figma, and TickTick, noting that pushing Obsidian further allowed the user to eliminate these tools entirely.

Notion has released version 7.37.0, introducing read-only default status options to API responses and MCP schemas, supported in @notionhq/client v5.28.0. The company is also focusing on enhancing Notion MCP, describing it as their fastest-growing product, with overhauls designed to help AI agents use Notion as a "shared brain" to find context and remember key information.

Obsidian has also issued updates to its "Bases" feature, improving search visibility by indicating when result limits hide matches (e.g., "Showing 10 of 40") and allowing formula fields to resize up to the window width. Additionally, community plugins now load faster upon startup.

Method

While specific new methodological studies published within the last 24 hours are limited, current trends emphasize consolidation and offline capability. The "Obsidian as a Hub" method involves using Markdown-first setups to replace fragmented tools. This approach reduces the cognitive load of switching between apps, a friction point highlighted in recent user testimonials. The method relies on plugins and internal linking to create a project management system that can outperform dedicated tools like Notion for some users, particularly those prioritizing data ownership and offline access.

Audit Your Subscription Stack for Consolidation Opportunities

With tools like Obsidian and Anytype offering robust offline and sync capabilities, users are increasingly finding they can replace multiple subscriptions. One user noted that Anytype provided flexibility that worked offline and still synced everywhere, offering an alternative to Notion and Obsidian. Try listing all your current productivity subscriptions and identifying one or two that can be consolidated into a single, more flexible tool like Obsidian or Anytype to reduce cost and context-switching.
