The biggest news in retro circles this week is the confirmed revival of Chris Roberts’ space flight sim classic. According to leaked footage and an announcement by an EA producer at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, Wing Commander 3 is set for a remaster. The project utilizes recently discovered master tapes of its live-action sequences, aiming to restore one of the crown jewels of '90s PC gaming.
October 2026 is shaping up to be a heavy month for classic revivals. The release calendar includes Tales of Eternia Remastered for modern consoles and PC, bringing Bandai Namco’s classic JRPG to a new generation. Additionally, Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered has been highlighted in recent roundups as a title that feels distinct from modern Musou entries, offering a unique challenge when played with classic settings.
Other notable mentions in recent retrospectives include a full remake of Fatal Frame (referenced in some contexts as targeting fans across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) and the continued availability of Lumines Remastered, which remains a top recommendation for growing backlogs on handheld devices.
Preservation
While specific new archival breakthroughs were not detailed in the immediate past-week news cycle, the broader context of preservation continues to evolve. The ecosystem around old games is becoming more professional and specialized, with FPGA console recreations and licensed handhelds becoming standard infrastructure for retro players. This trend highlights a shift where preservation is no longer just about emulation but about creating robust, modern-compatible hardware and software ecosystems that keep classic titles playable.
Classic Spotlight
Wing Commander 3 stands out as this week’s spotlight due to its unexpected return. Originally released in 1994, it was praised for its cinematic storytelling and live-action footage. The use of original master tapes for the remaster suggests a commitment to fidelity that resonates with preservationists and fans alike, ensuring that the game’s unique historical aesthetic is maintained rather than just visually overhauled.
