This Week's Shutdowns & Workforce Reductions

Biotech Sector Hit Hard

The biotech industry is experiencing significant workforce reductions. Foghorn Therapeutics announced a 40% workforce cut, while BioMarin Pharmaceutical eliminated 117 roles.

Year-to-Date Layoff Surge

Through October 2026, 623 layoff events have been recorded across tech and startups, impacting 190,077 workers—averaging 696 workers per day. This represents a significant acceleration from 2025, which saw 783 layoffs affecting 245,953 employees across the full year.

Deep Dive Postmortem

Biotech Under Pressure: Foghorn and BioMarin Cases

Two major biotech players announced significant cuts this week, reflecting broader challenges in the sector. Foghorn Therapeutics' 40% workforce reduction and BioMarin's 117-role elimination highlight persistent struggles in achieving profitability and market validation, even among established biotech firms.

The biotech sector has historically faced challenges with long development timelines, high R&D costs, and uncertain regulatory outcomes. These cuts suggest that many companies funded during the recent venture boom may have overextended their burn rates relative to clinical progress and market readiness.

Lessons Learned

1. Runway Management Remains Critical Companies must carefully calibrate cash burn to clinical milestones and regulatory timelines. Overestimating market pull or underestimating development costs remains a leading cause of startup failure.

2. Sector Vulnerability to Market Cycles Biotech's dependence on funding cycles and public market sentiment creates compounding risk. Sector-wide cuts suggest investors have recalibrated expectations after the 2021-2025 funding surge.

3. The 2026 Layoff Pattern With 696 workers laid off per day in 2026, the pace has actually slowed compared to 2025's full-year average (672 per day), but the concentration of announcements in Q4 suggests a final reckoning with over-hiring from the venture boom.
