Today's Market Strategy and Stock Guide — 2026-10-08

Today's Market Snapshot

• KOSPI: 6,625.93 (-2.62%, -177.97pt)
• KOSDAQ: 892.27 (-0.69%, -6.16pt)
• Supply & Demand: Foreigners and institutions combined net sold approx. 4 trillion KRW, individuals net bought approx. 1.6 trillion KRW.
• Key Notes: Selling pressure concentrated heavily across the semiconductor sector ahead of Samsung Electronics' earnings release.

Global Background — Overnight US Market

Overnight (October 7), the US stock market closed lower as anxiety heightened in the bond market. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq halted their record-high streaks and underwent corrections.

• Index Trends: The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes turned downward, giving up the previous day's record gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also fell in tandem.
• Yield Shock: The US 10-year Treasury yield surged to its highest level since 2002. This was due to renewed inflation concerns following the release of the Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes.
• Oil and Dollar: Rising oil prices acted as a factor increasing inflationary pressures, which hinted at the possibility of Fed rate hikes and dampened market sentiment.

Leading Sectors & Themes

Semiconductors (Led the Decline)

• Movement: Large-cap semiconductor stocks, centered around Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, took a direct hit from massive foreign selling, leading the index decline.
• Leaders (Down): Memory semiconductor leaders such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recorded larger drops than the market average.
• Checkpoints: Stock price direction for the following day is expected to be determined by the results of Samsung Electronics' Q3 preliminary earnings announcement scheduled for the night of October 8. BNK Investment & Securities recently lowered its target price for Samsung Electronics from 300,000 KRW to 270,000 KRW, leaving market expectations lowered.

Bio/Healthcare (Relative Strength)

• Movement: The defense shown by the bio sector served as the backdrop for the KOSDAQ index falling less than the KOSPI. A tendency for funds to move toward biotech during periods of tech weakness was observed.
• Checkpoints: While rising US Treasury yields can be negative for growth stocks like biotech, the domestic biotech sector showed relative resilience due to individual favorable news or undervalued appeal.

Other Growth Stocks/KOSDAQ Themes

• Movement: The KOSDAQ index finished at 892.27 with a limited decline rate of 0.69%. This contrasted with the KOSPI's steep 2.62% drop.
• Checkpoints: While large-cap selling continued, there may have been short-term capital inflows into small-to-mid-cap stocks or specific thematic stocks (gaming, entertainment, etc.).

Target Stock Response Guide (At least 3 stocks)

This guide is for reference based on publicly available news and reports, and investment decisions are your own responsibility.

Samsung Electronics (005930)

• Today's Close / Change Rate: Data absent (semiconductor-centric selling pressure continued amid a market-wide -2.62% decline environment)
• Supply & Demand: Target of concentrated selling by foreigners and institutions. "Foreign investors dumped South Korea's memory chip giants"
• Fundamental Trigger: Q3 preliminary earnings announcement scheduled for October 8. The market may have already priced in disappointment.
• Brokerage Target Price / Support & Resistance: BNK Investment & Securities lowered target from 300,000 KRW to 270,000 KRW (investment opinion 'Hold'). Mirae Asset Securities maintains 550,000 KRW. Testing support around the lowered target price line (270,000 KRW) due to recent drops is key.
• Risk Factors: 1) Preliminary earnings falling short of expectations 2) Increased valuation burden due to rising US rates.
• Response Scenario: After earnings announcement, need to check if the 270,000 KRW support line is broken if it misses consensus. Conservative approach recommended until any positive news emerges.

SK Hynix (000660)

• Today's Close / Change Rate: Data absent (simultaneous semiconductor sector downward trend)
• Supply & Demand: Foreign selling pressure continues.
• Fundamental Trigger: Positive fundamental reports exist, such as projected 2026-2028 ROE of 66% driven by rising memory prices and an increased proportion of long-term supply agreements (LTA).
• Brokerage Target Price / Support & Resistance: Mirae Asset Securities target price 4,200,000 KRW (up 10.5%). If the current stock price has a large divergence from the target price, it could act as a buying opportunity during short-term corrections, but watch out for interest rate variables.
• Risk Factors: 1) Possibility of linking to Samsung Electronics' earnings shock 2) Concerns over slowing HBM demand.
• Response Scenario: Must observe the impact (correlation) that Samsung Electronics' earnings announcement content has on the HBM sector.

KOSDAQ Representative Stocks (e.g., EcoProBM or other secondary battery/biotech leaders)

• Today's Close / Change Rate: KOSDAQ index relatively resilient at -0.69%.
• Supply & Demand: Inflows of individual supply and demand and some institutional sector rotation potential.
• Fundamental Trigger: The fact that the KOSDAQ showed defense despite the macro headwind of rising US interest rates may be due to expectations for individual stock earnings improvement or policy benefits.
• Risk Factors: 1) Valuation pressure across growth stocks if US Treasury yields rise further 2) Exchange rate volatility.
• Response Scenario: Prepare for potential additional declines if the KOSDAQ index breaks the 880 line.

Key Events to Watch Tomorrow

1. Samsung Electronics Q3 Preliminary Earnings Announcement: Announced after the market closes on October 8 (today). The biggest variable that will directly impact the semiconductor sector and the entire KOSPI at tomorrow's (October 9) open.
2. US Economic Indicators and Fed Statements: Following the FOMC minutes released overnight, additional remarks from Fed officials or news related to employment indicators could determine the direction of US Treasury yields.
3. Macroeconomic Indicators such as South Korea's Consumer Price Index (CPI): Domestic inflation trends affect the Bank of Korea's (BOK) rate policy path, so check relevant indicator release schedules.
4. Exchange Rate Fluctuations: Concerns over accelerating foreign capital flight if the KRW/USD exchange rate continues to rise.

One-Line Strategy Memo

With a surge in US Treasury yields and uncertainties surrounding Samsung Electronics' earnings overlapping, a 'risk-off' mode has intensified. Until Samsung Electronics' preliminary earnings results come out tomorrow, it is wise to reduce exposure to large-cap semiconductor stocks, maintain sectors showing relative strength within the KOSDAQ or hold cash, and observe from the sidelines. Whether the 6,600 support line holds is a key checkpoint for confirming a short-term bottom.
